I was shocked and saddened to read of Roys death in the SMH yesterday. I knew him in 1973 and 74 in Sydney where I shared a couple of houses with Gina and Roy when Gina and I were students together. Roy was very active in the union movement and left wing politics and had a big influence on me in this regard. The last time I heard of him was from Peter Murphy who was working with him in the bus union in Sydney some years ago now. I remember once when Roy had been camping at the National Park, he came back with beautiful drawings hed done of the rock pools. He was extremely talented, a great conversationalist and a voracious reader. He also had a fabulous collection of blues records. I am sorry to have lost touch with him so long ago. I send my deepest sympathy to his family. Im sure you had a fabulous life together. My best wishes, Shelley Greer

As an old friend of Roy's when he lived in Sydney in the late 60s and early 70s, I was saddened to read of his death in the SMH notices on Saturday. He introduced me to Rhythm and Blues music (I introduced him to World Music), and I loved it when he played his 'harp' at impromptu music jams.He was a voracious reader of left wing political material especially and had long-winded discussions with my father over too many glasses of red wine.He was heavily involved in the Mail Workers Union in Sydney, then Vic Rail Union in Victoria - the latter was past my time.We had a lot of crazy fun together.Latterly, I had been wondering what, if anything he was up to but could find nothing on the net, so was unable to re-connect with him or meet his family now-bereaved family.Having recently lost my 100 year old mother and a brother-in-law, I can imagine what you are going through now and hope you all get through this period of grief as well as possible.I am unable to attend Roy's funeral but I have a couple of photos you might like copies of.Best wishes, Gina PlateWith best wishes
