Tony was consistently reliable for Landcare Australia over two decades and was always an absolute pleasure to work with. I have fond memories of planning meetings in the compound to discuss large volunteering days with hundreds of people, being the glad recipient of many of Tonys tours of Westgate Park, setting up and packing down the catering for large events and just having a yarn about how we can share the amazing work of George and the whole team at Westgate Biodiversity with more Melbournians. Tony provided the opportunity for many children in the Port Phillip area (and beyond) to experience planting indigenous plants and learning about being in the urban outdoors. His encouragement and gentle nature inspired me, as a teacher, to keep finding ways to engage children with a love and care for nature in our city. Hundreds of children have been part of building nature in our city at Westgate Park thanks to Tony's efforts to engage the community in actions that make a difference. I will miss him.

I'm not sure how to put into words all of the different facets for me that Tony's leadership entailed. As a manager he held an enormous container of structure whereby he guided people of vast diversity into their roles to pull off (often) multiple complicated volunteer events simultaneously in a way that appeared to flow with ease and simplicity. Yet he would lead from the side, always diverting the praise and achievement to others. I admired his humour, his quick agile mind, his generosity, his belief that nothing was impossible, and his down to earth genuine care for everyone. During my time in the park Tony was not just a boss, he also became a dear friend & mentor. His company is dearly missed. Much love to George too.

For 13 years our life's pathways mirrored each other as we moved through school at MGS - sleep overs at Oxford St. They then coincided for two more years when we re-connected at Mobil Oil- many nice lunches. I met Tony a number of years ago when I wrote an article about Westgate Park for ParkWatch, the Victorian National Parks Association magazine. Always so friendly and considerate to all, Tony was a dedicated environmental volunteer who brought people, organisations, and resources together in recreating Westgate Park as beautiful natural parkland. As a bird enthusiast motivated by Tony to participate in bird surveys in the park, I have seen the transformation of Westgate Park to become one of Melbournes great birding hot-spots. Much of this can be attributed to Tonys achievements in making it all happen over the last 20 years.

At his first Westgate meeting, he introduced himself with "my name is Tony, and I move mulch". From such an unassuming beginning, he started organising many other people to help move mulch, plant, weed and assist with the many tasks to make Westgate Park what it is today.
