I was lucky enough to have Tony introduce me to Westgate Park last year Tony. Such a privilege! Even on first encounter one gets the feeling that here is a significant man. And he definitely passed on his enthusiasm for the Park to me. Thank you, Tony.

Tony was a gentle man who was filled with absolute optimism on life and humanity. He had absolute integrity and everytime we met it was a joy. We will miss him and never forget him. He was the type of human being we all aspire to be.

Report

Jackie Kerr — 11 September 2020

We had so much fun, while always intent on greening the Park for Melbourne. Tony supported our volunteers with skill, empathy and kindness. He was the best.

Report

Lecki Ord — 11 September 2020

When Tony first became ill we were desperate about how we would manage without him at the Park. Over the years he put in place a mechanism which would allow his legacy to be continued. Such and organiser - such a control freak. Thank you Tony. But who will now manage our social life? No on can replace that emphasis on friendship and building community.

Report

Paul Strickland — 11 September 2020

Although I had a regrettably short acquaintance with Tony though his involvement with the Victorian Environment Friends Network, his calm and thoughtful contributions were much appreciated, and his experience in the field much valued. I was looking forward to working with him, and am greatly saddened that will now not be possible.

Tony was one of natures true gentlemen. A kind and gracious guy that helped me as a young fella get to understand the oil game when i first started. He will be missed by all and hope he enjoys eternal peace.

Im so glad to have been able to work with Tony to help bring volunteers, vehicles and funding support to Westgate Park. Tony was consistently reliable for Landcare Australia over two decades and was always an absolute pleasure to work with. I have fond memories of planning meetings in the compound to discuss large volunteering days with hundreds of people, being the glad recipient of many of Tonys tours of Westgate Park, setting up and packing down the catering for large events and just having a yarn about how we can share the amazing work of George and the whole team at Westgate Biodiversity with more Melbournians. A true urban Landcare champion who will be dearly missed.

Tony provided the opportunity for many children in the Port Phillip area (and beyond) to experience planting indigenous plants and learning about being in the urban outdoors. His encouragement and gentle nature inspired me, as a teacher, to keep finding ways to engage children with a love and care for nature in our city. Hundreds of children have been part of building nature in our city at Westgate Park thanks to Tony's efforts to engage the community in actions that make a difference. I will miss him.

Report

Joanna Cathie — 11 September 2020

I'm not sure how to put into words all of the different facets for me that Tony's leadership entailed. As a manager he held an enormous container of structure whereby he guided people of vast diversity into their roles to pull off (often) multiple complicated volunteer events simultaneously in a way that appeared to flow with ease and simplicity. Yet he would lead from the side, always diverting the praise and achievement to others. I admired his humour, his quick agile mind, his generosity, his belief that nothing was impossible, and his down to earth genuine care for everyone. During my time in the park Tony was not just a boss, he also became a dear friend & mentor. His company is dearly missed. Much love to George too.

His enduring legacy locally will be Westgate Park, the Ecocentre and commitment to justice and sustainably. His commitment to the future of the planet and its diversity in all its forms endures in these works . He may no longer be here with us all now. But he will be warmly remembered and honoured. I first met Tony in 1951. For 13 years our life's pathways mirrored each other as we moved through school at MGS - sleep overs at Oxford St. They then coincided for two more years when we re-connected at Mobil Oil- many nice lunches. When I left Mobil , sadly & to my deepest regret, the inevitably of life's changes took over & we lost touch.Tony was a lovely bloke & reading the tributes, a staunch environmentalist, to be thanked & greatly admired for his contributions to this important area.My deepest condolences to his partner George, & to his family & friends.I hope we can have another extended lunch sometime.RIP Tony

Tony Flude became a good friend and loomed as a large force in this transformation process. I met Tony a number of years ago when I wrote an article about Westgate Park for ParkWatch, the Victorian National Parks Association magazine. Tony was unfailingly kind, helpful and considerate to me, and also very persuasive, a talent he used to to get others to share his commitment and enthusiasm for creating a beautiful park. He can be proud of the legacy he has left, a wonderful natural refuge in which I find peace and something to marvel at each time I visit. My condolences to his family and friends. Always so friendly and considerate to all, Tony was a dedicated environmental volunteer who brought people, organisations, and resources together in recreating Westgate Park as beautiful natural parkland. As a bird enthusiast motivated by Tony to participate in bird surveys in the park, I have seen the transformation of Westgate Park to become one of Melbournes great birding hot-spots. Much of this can be attributed to Tonys achievements in making it all happen over the last 20 years.

At his first Westgate meeting, he introduced himself with "my name is Tony, and I move mulch". From such an unassuming beginning, he started organising many other people to help move mulch, plant, weed and assist with the many tasks to make Westgate Park what it is today. He was a generous and dedicated man, with a cheeky sense of humour, who was skilled at making connections between people and organisations. I will remember many good times with him and George.
