I struggle to put the significance of David into words. Both the significant contribution he made to the public (who might not know it), to the people he worked with, and to me personally. And harder, to reflect this in words. David had a particular respect and mastery of words. It took dedication and time, when most public servants were no longer at the office. I think of Deidre, Issy and Jack who shared David with his work. We share your loss now.

Nikki Gemmill — 18 September 2019

Stuart Gemmill and I - two generations of water nerds - were both thrilled to have worked with (and learned from) David. We both enjoyed that he was sharply funny, so very lovely, and of course a great intellectual. We are very sad that he is gone and sadly neither of us are able to attend his celebration and farewell. Our deepest sympathy to Deidre and family and close friends. His legacy is great.

David was a dear friend to Bill Brydon and me during some of the most exciting and trying times of our lives. Even living so far away, David was a support to me when I most needed it. We loved him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

David was a wonderful man who I have known for forty five years. In recent times I again again witnessed his passion for thoughtfully addressing really important issues to do with the environment, democratic governance and accountability of political parties and foreign affairs. This passion for a better world was always accompanied by a great sense of humour and concern for others. We had some great times together and I am going to miss him. My deepest sympathies to Dierdre, Issy and Jack. I am so sorry that I will not be able to attend the event to be held in his memory and the celebration of his achievements.

David was a very special friend for 45 years. We shared many good times in England and Australia, most recently on a wonderful road trip through South Australia and Victoria. He had a great sense of humour, was very caring, and passionate about so many issues. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts are with Deirdre, Issy, Jack, and the family.
