Dear Celia, Lucien and Astrid,I am so sad to be missing the chance to say goodbye to Ulrik. When Celia and Ulrik spent their first date sharing a table with Mark and me at the Exeter Hotel in Adelaide, I remember thinking that we were going to know each other for a long time. Little did I know just how true that would be. After working together for more than 20 years, Ulrik was not only my friend, but part of my daily life and my work family.Ulrik and I were similar in many ways. We both had fairly private exteriors, but were fiercely loyal to the people who mattered to us. There was an ease to our friendship. We were comfortable together, and I always knew that if I needed him, he would be there. I have missed his companionship since leaving work.Celia, I had imagined such a different future for you and Ulrik. After all those years of working hard, I thought there would be a long retirement ahead, with time to enjoy life together. I am so sad that you didn't get that time and the reward that you both deserved.Lucien and Astrid, although you are adults now, you are still far too young to have lost your dad. I know you will be a great source of strength for your mum, as she will be for both of you.I am heartbroken by the unfairness of it all, as I know everyone who knew and loved Ulrik must be. He was a very important part of my life for a very long time, and I will remember him with enormous affection. With all my love,Renata
