Margaret - such a kind, true and beautiful friend. We shall miss our coffee conversations and book chats.
Meredith Jones — 29 July 2021
I have so many memories of Margaret. Once when our families were camping at the beach Emma went missing--she must have been about three or four I think, the youngest kid. We were all sent running to search for her. I arrived back at the beach to see Margaret diving through the waves, over and over, in her clothes, calling for Emma. I remember Margaret taking the aluminium top off a bottle of milk and, closing her eyes, licking the cream off it.I remember her in the kitchen slicing a Vienna loaf with a sharp bread knife that had a worn wooden handle.I remember once riding my bike over from Northcote, pushing it down the sideway (none of us kids ever entered through the front door) only to find that Naomi, my best friend, wasn't home. Margaret kept pottering around, and we had a cup of sweet tea and quite a grown up chat together, as if I was *her* special friend. Thank you Margaret.

Beautiful, kind Margaret, nearly 20 years ago you welcomed me into McKean St for the first time. An amazing world of books, crosswords, endless pots of tea, a magical Enid Blyton garden, family feasts, laughter and (most importantly!) politics. You always made me feel one of the family, always a big smile and welcome whenever I came over, always asking after my parents, always in a genuine, heartfelt way. Arabella, Evie and Tashi couldnt have asked for a more caring, loving, and supportive Granma. You have been such an important presence in Arabellas life, especially since we moved to Melbourne. It was a real tribute to your community involvement that Arabella was able to have her last year of kindy at Isobel Henderson, which you were instrumental in saving when the Eastern cut a brutal line through Fitzroy in the 70s. And this demonstrates perfectly what you have been able to do so effortlessly in your life, weave together family and community. Create joy in the home, and effect change in the world. To care about all. Pure love. So many beautiful memories. Its terribly heartbreaking to imagine our lives without you in it. Thank you for everything, Margaret, knowing you has been so special. /bhu x

Dearest Pullen Family, my deepest condolences on the passing of the beautiful, witty, caring and influential Margaret Pullen.I have so many precious memories of Margaret. She was such a caring person who always listened to me (I was lucky enough to be Emma's friend) and gave me a love of nature, social equality and education. I loved her delicious food (even her left-overs were amazing). I remember being so jealous of Emma's roast lamb rolls at school - decades before they were a thing. She was the most welcoming and charming person full of wit and inner confidence. I'll never forget coming home from school one day to your house and Margaret was dancing in the billiard room to really loud music, completely oblivious to our presence. Even when she realised we were there, she still continued to dance away. I was so impressed that she was able to be so free and expressive - I have never forgotten that. Love you Margaret, thank you xoxo

Dear Barry, Joanna, Naomi, and Emma,We are so sorry to hear your sad news. I have images of Margaret bustling around the campsite, always full of practical advice and the best source of a good book to read.
